Human Highlights: What Matters

Human Highlights is a Sunday tradition at Commode To Joy. It’s a friendly reminder to forgive your human moments, to celebrate the highlights, and to enjoy life’s little lovelies in the interim.

Throughout the week, invariably, I do something big or small that registers on my “Human Moment” radar. I flag it in my mind and write about it come Sunday. I did that at some point this past week, only right now I can’t recall it.

For those of you who follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that today is my dad’s birthday. In the seven years that he’s been gone, my annual birthday tradition for him is to drink a Cherry Pepsi – his favorite pop.

My husband, son, and I went to brunch this morning, where I placed my drink order and headed to the food stations. Sitting on the dessert table was red velvet cake, dad’s birthday cake of choice. Hi dad. I see you.

When we got home from brunch and put Miller down for his nap, I headed to our bedroom to change the sheets and tend to laundry. I looked out the windows in time to see a swan gliding along on the lake. Honestly, I don’t recall ever seeing a swan on our basin since we’ve lived here. Because I’m a little bit woo-woo (okay, a lot), I looked up the spirit meaning of the swan. The line that stuck out to me referred to the swan’s commitment to relationships, and the blessings found within them. Of course. Of course I see a swan, today, when I’m celebrating one of the greatest relationships of my life. Hi dad. I thank you.

Once the swan was out of sight, I turned on Pandora. What A Wonderful World, the song that dad and I would’ve dance to together at my wedding reception, started playing. Hi dad. I hear you.

So for today, this Human Highlights installment is a bit different. Today, the human moments don’t matter. They’re blips, hiccups, forgettable even in the large, large scope of life.

Sitting outside, overlooking the lake, typing this post as I soak up the sunshine and my dad’s love, this is the highlight of my week. This is what matters. Love. Relationships. The kind that stands the test of time and beyond. Because love doesn’t know space and time. Hi dad. I love you.

For those of you grieving, death can be very sad. But, through it can come joy, if you’re open to it.

Today has been a collection of life’s little lovelies that have made for one incredible highlight.

What are your Human Highlights from the week?

One day a friend reached out to me in a way that become a lifeline. There was a tile with a message on it…
    Don’t cry because it’s over
    Smile because it happened.

I realized it is a choice.

    Thank you friend💙
