Human Highlights: Silly Serious Smartass

Human Highlights is a Sunday tradition at Commode To Joy. It’s a friendly reminder to forgive your human moments, celebrate the highlights, and enjoy life’s little lovelies in the interim.

Human Moment: Mark called me out on one of my verbal ticks this week – you know, the things you say all the time without realizing you say them.

Let me interrupt myself by saying that it’s highly uncharacteristic for Mark to call me out on something like this. If I’m being overly emotional when logic can clearly fix everything, sure he’s all over it. But when I’m being my typical go-with-the-flow/persnickety, silly/serious self, he rolls with it.

You can imagine my surprise, then, when I asked him to do something and he didn’t do it. “What?” he shrugged. “You didn’t ask me to do it. You said, ‘You wanna throw those away?’ and I didn’t want to.”

Clearly he missed the marital memo stating that it’s my job to be the smartass.

Here’s a little Mark and Jamie nuance: I remember the energy of a situation/conversation. I remember body language, tone, and nonverbals. I feel feelings (mine and what others are throwing off). It is rare that I can give a verbatim recount of conversation. Then there is Mark who remembers word for what was said, even when it appears he isn’t listening.

You wanna get back on topic Jamie?

My point is, Mark was right. I asked him if he wanted to throw whatever it was away instead of asking, “Will you throw that away?”

Just like I’ve since asked,

“You wanna change Miller’s diaper?”

“You wanna put Miller’s pajamas on him?”

“You wanna put your bag in the closet?”

It’s become somewhat entertaining, hearing this phrase pop out. Kind of like when a dog hears himself fart and starts turning in circles trying to find it. But it’s not really like that at all. Except, at this point, it does still make both of us laugh when it happens, so maybe it’s a little similar. And then I put on by best bark, “Put your bag away!”

What can I say? It’s love, indirect/bossy smartass/you’ve-got-a-point human moments and all.

Highlight: Last week my human moment was forgetting to cut some Lily of the Valley for a vase arrangement inside. I thought I’d have to wait a whole nother year before enjoying their fragrance again.

This week, my highlight stems from a kind gesture by a friend who read last week’s Human Highlights and left a vase full of fresh cut Lily of the Valley on my doorstep Monday morning.

Life’s Little Lovelies: When I’m completely unaware of someone taking candid photos, this is what happens.
