We’re celebrating our 8 year anniversary, which has me all kinds of reflective and optimistic. And why not be optimistic when things are going well? Part of what’s gotten us to this point isn’t looming vows or the iron rod of commitment. It’s not even the old cliché about give and take. It’s more an approach of give and accept.

Miller and I made it home from our trip to Connecticut. He’s flown about a gajillion times, but it’s the first time we’ve flown together just the two of us. It’s also a feat akin to childbirth. Just ask my anxiety. The trip out was rough, and I don’t mean turbulence. By the time we departed from Midway, I was questioning my decision. I’ve been experiencing the gift of small talk lately, something that seems to get a bad rap. Sure, it’s a must-do at work-related functions and can be forced at cocktail parties. That’s the side of the coin that folks tend to focus on; but small talk doesn’t have to stop there. When used thoughtfully, small talk can be a useful antidote to stress.
